Hippodrome reopens in Leicester Square

Hippodrome reopens in Leicester Square

The Hippodrome in London’s Leicester Square reopens this July as the UK’s first international-style casino.

A £40m redevelopment project has transformed the historic building and adjacent gentleman’s apartment block Cranbourn Mansions into the Hippodrome Casino.

The project is funded by father and son team, Jimmy and Simon Thomas, co-owners of the site. Architects Cadmium Design has restored many features of the original building.

The new venue features three gaming floors, 180-seat cabaret theatre, five bars, a two tier smoking terrace, a 140-seat restaurant and four private dining rooms.

Opened on January 1900, as a theatre for circus spectaculars, the Hippodrome has evolved to suit the entertainment mood of the period, hosting the likes of Houdini, ballet, cabaret and stars such as Sammy Davis Junior, Shirley Bassey and Tom Jones. The building last served as a super club owned by Peter Stringfellow.
