New museum brings Britain’s postal heritage to life

New museum brings Britain’s postal heritage to life

The Postal Museum, London’s newest heritage attraction, opened to the public this summer bringing to life five centuries of history about Britain’s post.

International design consultancy hsd was responsible for the interpretive journey combining the latest design techniques with traditional exhibition media and collection displays to reveal the stories from one of Britain’s most iconic services.

Visitors to the new Postal Museum are taken through five interactive zones, leading them through centuries of innovation and change in the way Britain has sent and received post.

The Postal Museum is also home to Mail Rail, a new ride transporting visitors back in time through the disused miniature tunnels of the world’s first driverless, electric railway which was used to transport mail under the capital.

Newly-commissioned trains take passengers on a journey under London’s streets. Stopping at two platforms along the way, stories of the postal service are projected onto the tunnel walls and platforms using dynamic 3D mapping.
