Mayflower Theatre to reopen after biggest makeover in 30 years

Mayflower Theatre to reopen after biggest makeover in 30 years

Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre reopens to the public in September following a £7.5m refurbishment, its biggest makeover in three decades.

As the third biggest theatre by capacity in the UK outside London and the largest theatre in the south of England, the Mayflower attracts more than 500,000 people a year with almost 30,000 participating in its educational programme of workshops and community projects.

The theatre has been closed for three months while undergoing significant refurbishment not only to preserve the building, but also provide higher levels of comfort, better access and more opportunities to experience live performance.

Works have included repainting the entire auditorium, installing 1,659 new and wider seats in the stalls and circle, installing LED lighting, moving the orchestra pit to under the stage and increasing accessibility, with better facilities for people with disabilities.
