Bombay Sapphire plans visitor centre

Bombay Sapphire plans visitor centre

Work is underway on a multi-million pound visitor centre and distillery for Bombay Sapphire gin.

Designer Thomas Heatherwick is responsible for the design of the site, which will restore historic buildings at a derelict mill in Hampsire.

Set to encompass high standards in design, functionality and sustainability, the distillery will be built on a two hectare brownfield site. The project aims to restore the buildings, grounds and its heritage, while introducing a new structure that will complement the existing buildings.

The centerpiece of the site is the glass house for Bombay Sapphire gin’s 10 botanicals, from which the particular flavours of the gin derive. Here, visitors will experience the specific horticultural specimens infused in the spirit. The glass house, influenced by Britain's heritage of glass house structures, will be two separate structures providing both a humid environment for spices that originate from the tropics, as well as a dry temperate zone for Mediterranean plants.

The centre is due to open in autumn 2013.
