Green light for Swansea transformation

Green light for Swansea transformation

Planning permission has been granted for the first phase of Swansea Central, one of the city’s biggest ever transformation projects.

Masterplanned by ACME, the scheme includes a 3,500-capacity arena to accommodate major theatrical events as well as exhibitions and conferences. The 8,825sq m Swansea Arena will be the first such venue in the UK to be wrapped in a dynamic digital skin, which will consist of a pleated perforated anodized aluminium facade with integrated LED lighting to broadcast events and performances to the adjacent digital square and the wider city.

A new pedestrian bridge will connect the city centre with the arena and marina to improve access and transport in the area. The scheme will bring more than 20,000sq m of public space to the city, including new parkland with parking underneath. Inspired by Swansea’s coastal landscape, this will be the first new park in the city since Victorian times.

There are also proposals for a new hotel on the arena site.

“The new bridge will be the first step in our vision to bring the city closer to the beaches of Swansea Bay. The digital square and the new coastal park will create new public spaces and the first new park in Swansea for generations. Swansea Arena will be a great place for concerts, and the catalyst for future growth, anchoring a new quarter in the city centre comprising hotel, education, leisure and living,” said ACME director, Friedrich Ludewig.
