Approval for arboretum transformation

Approval for arboretum transformation

Plans to redevelop the National Memorial Arboretum to cater for a dramatic increase in visitor numbers have been approved.

Devised by Glenn Howells Architects, proposals for the 150-acre site include replacing the existing visitor centre with a new Centre for Remembrance incorporating an education centre, exhibition space, interpretation area and functions pavilion.

The redevelopment of the Staffordshire site, which is the subject of a £12m fundraising appeal, will also offer upgraded retail, catering and office facilities and a large restaurant with views over the arboretum and Heroes’ Square.

Glenn Howells Architects is working with landscape architects Fira to unite the wider landscape of the arboretum and the new buildings. Fira’s proposed landscape masterplan will create public green space.

The project is due to complete by the end of 2014.
