Construction is underway on a new riverboat terminal on the Thames incorporating a large new public space.

Designed by London-based architects Nex—, the Royal Wharf Pier is located in the Royal Wharf development in London’s Royal Docks and is set to improve connectivity in east London with a fast route to and from the capital.

The contemporary design replaces a derelict jetty, addressing the practical requirements of MBNA Thames Clippers’ traffic while also providing a new public space.

The new peer features a 162sq m viewing platform set upon the river with integrated seating allowing people to relax and admire the views up and down the Thames. A waiting area is enclosed in a metal shell to provide warmth and protection from the elements.

Royal Wharf Pier is part of the Royal Wharf development by Ballymore and Oxley. It stands within the £3.5bn Royal Docks regeneration area and includes townhouses, duplexes, apartments and suites and a new market square with shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Forty five per cent of the 40 acre development is devoted to outside space, including a 500m riverfront promenade.

Royal Wharf Pier is expected to open in late 2019.
