The Museum of London plans to play a major role in the capital’s night-time economy when it moves to its new home in West Smithfield.

Designs by Stanton Williams and Asif Khan with Julian Harrap Architects, show how a campus of dilapidated market buildings will be transformed into a 24-hour cultural destination.

The plans aim to secure the future of the buildings and celebrate their historic architecture, while creating a memorable visitor experience.

The new home will allow the museum to display more of its collection and create blockbuster exhibitions with a broader appeal. The exhibitions would be set inside atmospheric spaces, making use of the historic buildings both above and below the ground.

The plans would also see the museum become a centre for learning and allow the museum to fulfil its ambitions to reach every London school child and enhance their learning experience. The museum will also increase its night-time offer. A planning application is due to be submitted by the end of the year, with the opening expected in 2024.
