£80m new home for Design Museum

£80m new home for Design Museum

The Design Museum aims to double its visitor numbers when it moves to its new £80m home at the Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington, London.

The move to Kensington’s cultural quarter where it will join the likes of the V&A, Science Museum and Natural History Museum, will give the facility three times more space to showcase its collection. The museum aims to boost visitor numbers to 500,000 a year, and will greatly expand its education and public events programme.

The new museum will open in 2014. The fundraising target is £44.66m of which more than 60 per cent has been secured through the support of a number of individuals and trusts and foundations.

John Pawson has redesigned the interior of the Grade 2* listed 1960s Commonwealth Institute building, which has lain dormant for over a decade.
