Sports and leisure facilities for Orkney

Sports and leisure facilities for Orkney

New sports facilities have opened at Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall, Orkney’s sports, arts, leisure, cinema and conference facility.

The extension is part of Orkney Islands Council’s £57m Schools Investment Programme, which also will deliver two new schools, the Orkney Arts Theatre and halls of residence.

It houses a six lane, 25m swimming pool with a moveable floor and a leisure pool, which includes features such as river rapids, water cannons and a toddler pool.

The leisure pool also has an air seat, which acts like a mini-spa pool, and five geysers across its shallow end. Beside the pool is a 2.2m wide heated spa pool for relaxation. The cannons fire out up to 5m3 of water per hour continuously, while the river rapids run across a 6m stretch of the leisure pool with three archways dropping continuous sheets of water downwards, like water curtains.

The extension also includes a new health suite with a sauna and steam room along with three squash courts and a social area for squash players.

The main contractor was Morrison Construction, while aqua-leisure specialist Barr + Wray installed the filtration system and water features for the leisure centre’s pools.
