Youth development completes at Wigan

Youth development completes at Wigan

The UK’s largest youth club has been constructed at Wigan Youth Zone.

The 3,400sq m development at Mesnes Field is the latest bespoke facility in a network of North West Youth Zone Projects set up by the OnSide charity.

As OnSide's first youth centre to be largely funded by private sector money, it will provide recreational amenities incorporating sport, music and art studios, a climbing wall, all-weather pitches and improved green public spaces. The scheme is the brainchild of owner and chairman of Wigan Athletic Football Club, Dave Whelan, who has with Martin and Bill Ainscough, donated more than half of the £6.5m costs.

“This place is the best of its kind in Europe. I went to the old Wigan Boys’ Club as a young lad and it turned my life around,” said Whelan.

Tolent Construction, which built the Factory Youth Zone in Harpurhey, Manchester last year, was responsible for the construction of centre.
