Landmark hotel on track in £200m Newcastle scheme

Landmark hotel on track in £200m Newcastle scheme

The first phase of the £200m Stephenson Quarter in Newcastle is on course for completion in July 2015.

This includes the development of a landmark 251-bed four-star+ Crowne Plaza Hotel and conference centre as well as a combined 357-space multi-storey car park and 35,000 sq ft of Grade A office space.

The scheme is being driven forward by developers Silverlink and constructed by Miller Construction, via a funding deal that involves Newcastle City Council, RBS, Aviva and the NE LEP.

Particular attention has been paid to areas of green design as phase one of the project is aspiring to achieve BREEAM Excellent standard. Desco, which has provided the M&E designs for the scheme, has focussed on energy-savings from a number of key areas including the leisure pool at the four-star+ Crowne Plaza Hotel, where it is using CHP to generate heat and electricity.

Stephenson Quarter is intended to transform the area connecting Newcastle’s quayside with the Central Gateway project and the city centre. Subsequent phases will include commercial offices, a boutique hotel, apartments, retail premises, exhibition centre and redevelopment of the listed buildings in the area.
