Approval for £500m Westgate plans
Oxford City Council’s West Area Planning Committee has granted outline planning permission for Westgate Oxford Alliance’s £500m redevelopment of the Westgate Centre and adjacent land.
The Alliance, a joint venture between The Crown Estate and Land Securities, has spent four years preparing the plans and undertaking extensive consultation.
Scheduled to open in 2017, the retail-led mixed use development will provide space for shops, restaurants, cafés and leisure uses including a cinema set in a mix of covered streets, arcades, lanes and squares.
The existing Westgate will be completely refurbished and adjacent land to the south redeveloped to provide up to 81,922sq m for shops including a John Lewis department store, up to 26,712sq m for cafés and restaurants and between 27 and 122 new homes.
The Westgate Oxford Alliance is now progressing the detailed designs for the new Westgate working with four architectural practices. The process is being overseen by Westgate masterplanners BDP.
