UK’s biggest sports hall

UK’s biggest sports hall

Sporthouse, the UK’s biggest sports hall has opened in Dagenham, East London.

The £8.1m facility, which features a 5,000sq m sports hall and a 1,000sq m gym, is one of the Games time training venues. Following the Games, the arena will revert to a general sports and community leisure facility for the local community.

The building, designed by architect, David de la Riche, lies within 4.2 acres of the 45 hectare Mayesbrook Park. After the Games, the arena will sit alongside the two all-weather outdoor courts, which are planned to be free for the public to use.

The project included the demolition of existing buildings and construction of a community sports centre, new changing rooms, new pitches, two external multi-purpose courts and associated facilities and landscaping, car parking, highway works.

The build also features a relocated ‘adizone’ fitness area, which is used as a platform for local communities to engage with many different types of physical activity.
