New sports centre for Derby Uni

New sports centre for Derby Uni

Work has started on a £10.8m sports centre at the University of Derby.

Located at the university’s Kedleston Road site, the multi sports centre will be open to students, staff and other community organisations. Facilities will include a sports hall, gym, dance studio, squash and badminton courts, a climbing wall as well as a three lane indoor sprint area with adjacent strength and conditioning areas and an analysis lab.

Designed by architects William Saunders with G F Tomlinson as main contractor, the building been designed and engineered to be built into the natural slope of the site. The facility will be built to a BREEAM standard and will feature a green-coloured curved roof. Excavated material will be re-used for surrounding ramps to minimise the building’s visual impact.

“When completed, the building will give us some of the best sporting facilities in the Midlands, providing the perfect place for our students to participate, develop and achieve even more through our Team Derby brand,” says Hari Punchihewa, deputy chief executive and finance director at the University of Derby.

The centre is due to open in summer 2015.
